WILLIAM THOMAS FLOYD, SR. "Will", oldest child of Robert Sylvanus Floyd and Sarah Elizabeth Reaves Born: Saturday, September 8, 1877, in Lancaster County, South Carolina Married: Sara Jane Cauthen on July 18, 1897, at Hanging Rock Methodist Church, Lancaster County, South Carolina He was 19; she was 20. Died: October 1, 1904, at the age of 27 and is buried at the Salem Cemetery, Heath Springs, Lancaster County, S.C. Will lived in Lancaster County, S.C. his entire life. He studied agriculture at Clemson College in Clemson, S.C., for one year. Farming and the operation of a cotton-gin house were his occupations. Will belonged to the White Oak Camp Woodmen of the World #103. His religion was Baptist. Part of the story of William T. Floyd, Sr.'s tragic and untimely death is given below as found in Floyd-Ervin Family, p. 21 by Viola Caston Floyd. "William was approached on October 1, 1904, on the street of Kershaw by a drunken man who asked for a dime that he might buy another drink. William refused the request and went on his way. He was about ten feet from the intoxicated man when the man turned and without warning fired two shots, one of which pierced William's heart. A mob lynched the murderer before the state militia could arrive to calm the infuriated citizenry of the town and surrounding locality!'
