Shared note

From the Starnes book: "He served in the Civil War and was a planter and slave owner."

Also: "Thomas and Elizabeth's home and farm was located on a tributary of Cane Creek. The old home, which still stands, is the oldest Starnes home in Union County, North Carolina, and is owned by the children of Brinkman S. Starnes (their great-grandchildren). It was built around 1844. The original well, which now furnishes water for the home, was walled with handmade brick made on the plantation. The brick molds used to make these bricks are owned by a great-grandson. Severald pieces of the walnut furniture used in this home are now owned by descendants.
