## Source

Lancaster County (formerly Lancaster District), South Carolina, Court of Common Pleas, Judgment Roll 960 (Box 25). Original records held by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia, SC. Transcribed from photographs of the original judgment roll (image files: folder [960](960/), 8 photographs).

## Disclaimer

This transcription was made using AI (Claude, by Anthropic) from photographs of the original court papers. It is an attempted transcription, not a certified copy. Faded ink, difficult handwriting, torn folds and damaged pages make some readings uncertain, and errors are possible. Check the original images before relying on any reading.

## Transcription conventions

- Original spelling, capitalization and abbreviations are kept as written.
- `[?]` = uncertain reading; `[illegible]` = could not be read; `[blank]` = a space left empty on the original.
- `[struck: ...]` = printed or written text that is lined through on the original.
- `[...]` and *[italic bracketed notes]* = editorial explanations added by the transcriber; `[letters]` inside a word = letters supplied to expand an abbreviation.
- On printed forms, handwritten fill-ins are shown in ***bold italics*** where it helps to tell them apart from the printed text.
- "Img." numbers refer to the photographs in the roll's image folder, in file-name order, which is not always the order the papers were written in.

**Notes on these images:**

- Imgs. 1, 2, 3 and 7 were photographed sideways or upside down and were rotated for reading.
- Most sheets are water-stained; the stains have faded the ink in places.
- Img. 5 is a printed "Copy Writ" form whose handwritten fill-ins have faded almost completely; Img. 6 is its back, on which only a few faint words show. They are described rather than transcribed.

> [Of] this day to wit, at Lancaster Court House, the first Monday after the fourth Monday in March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, to which time the said Richard had leave to answer to the declaration aforesaid of them the said Administrators, and the said Richard although solemnly called comes [struck: illegible] not, whereupon the said Administrators remains thereof undefended against him - & Because the demand against him is a liquidated demand within the meaning of the act of the Gen[era]l Assembly it becomes unnecessary to execute a writ of enquiry but on motion the same to be referred to the Clerk of court to assess what damages the said Administrators hath sustained, & the same on motion being referred to the Clerk Wm. McKenna, he finds the amount of the Interest & Principle to be two hundred & [struck: illegible] twenty five dollars 89 cents being the damages complained of. It is therefore considered by the said Court now here, that the said Administrators do recover against the said Richard the said sum so assessed by the Clerk aforesaid and also the sum of Twenty One dollars & Seventy One cents for their costs & charges by them expended in and about the prosecuting them [sic] in this behalf to them with his assent adjudged, amounting in the whole to Two hundred & forty seven Dollars & Sixty cents & be the said Richard in Mercy & so forth -
