| **Pages in source images** | 26 |

## Source

Lancaster County (formerly Lancaster District), South Carolina, Court of Common Pleas, Judgment Roll 337 (Box 9). Original records held by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia, SC. Transcribed from photographs of the original judgment roll (image files: folder [337](337/), 26 photographs).

## Disclaimer

This transcription was made using AI (Claude, by Anthropic) from photographs of the original court papers. It is an attempted transcription, not a certified copy. Faded ink, difficult handwriting, torn folds and damaged pages make some readings uncertain, and errors are possible. Check the original images before relying on any reading.

## Transcription conventions

- Original spelling, capitalization and abbreviations are kept as written.
- `[?]` = uncertain reading; `[illegible]` = could not be read; `[blank]` = a space left empty on the original.
- `[struck: ...]` = printed or written text that is lined through on the original.
- `[...]` and *[italic bracketed notes]* = editorial explanations added by the transcriber; `[letters]` inside a word = letters supplied to expand an abbreviation.
- On printed forms, handwritten fill-ins are shown in ***bold italics*** where it helps to tell them apart from the printed text.
- "Img." numbers refer to the photographs in the roll's image folder, in file-name order, which is not always the order the papers were written in.

**Notes on these images:**

- Imgs. 1-3 show the folded declaration from different angles; Img. 4 shows the docket cover and the end of the declaration with the copied notes. The transcription of the declaration combines them.
- Many sheets were photographed sideways or upside down and were rotated for reading.
- The roll holds the original writ, the declaration, the two original notes, the judgment, and six writs of fieri facias (the first and five renewals, 1814-1819), each with its endorsed back. The fi. fa. backs repeat a running bill of costs; their figures are given as written.
- The surname is spelled "Madox" throughout, and "Maddox" nowhere.

> Daniel [struck: illegible] Madox was attached to answer to Jason Hicklin and Hugh Hicklin administrators of all and singular the goods and Chattels Rights and Credits of Arthur Hicklin Deceased in a plea of trespass on the case and so forth. Whereupon the said Jason & Hugh as administrators aforesaid by Hooker & Williams their attorneys complain that whereas the aforesaid Daniel Madox the twenty eighth Day of December Eighteen hundred and four did make his certain Note in writing [struck: obligatory] commonly called a promissory Note subscribed by his own proper hand bearing date the day and year aforesaid the same Note did then and there deliver to wit at Lancaster Court House in the District and State aforesaid by which Note the aforesaid Daniel did promise to pay to Arthur Hicklin in his lifetime the sum of three Pounds Six Shillings lawful Money of the said State of South Carolina made payable two days after the date thereof. Also one other Note in writing commonly called a promissory note subscribed by his own proper hand bearing date the twentieth day of December Eighteen hundred and Nine [struck: which Note] the same Note did then and there deliver to wit at Lancaster Court House in the District and State aforesaid unto the said Arthur Hicklin in his lifetime the day and year last aforesaid by which Note the aforesaid Daniel did promise to pay the said Arthur in his lifetime the just sum of One hundred and six Dollars and ten cents made payable ten days after the date thereof amounting in the whole to one hundred and twenty Dollars and twenty five cents: By reason whereof and by force of the statute in such case made and provided the said Daniel became liable to pay to the said Arthur in his lifetime aforesaid the said sums of money in the said notes mentioned according to the tenor and effect of the said notes. and being so liable he the Daniel in consideration thereof afterwards towit on the day and year last aforesaid, at the place aforesaid undertook, and upon himself did assume and then and there faithfully promised the said Arthur in his life time aforesaid, that he would well and truly pay unto him the said several sums of money in the said notes mentioned when he should be afterwards requested. Yet the said Daniel not regarding his said promises and assumptions, in manner aforesaid made, but contriving and fraudulently intending craftily and subtilly to deceive and defraud the said Arthur in this aspect [?], [struck: has] did not pay unto him in his life time aforesaid the said several sums of [money above mentioned?] in the said note mentioned nor since his death to either of them the said Jason and Hugh, but the same to pay to them hath hitherto wholly refused, & still doth refuse (although often thereunto required) to their damage two hundred Dollars, and therefore they bring suit and so forth; And the said Jason & Hugh produces here in court their letters of administration, which show their right of administration and so forth.
